Guidelines for Rural School Visits

Secondary Schools and Tertiary Institutions
SATAC, on behalf of South Australia’s three universities and TAFESA, will coordinate a rural tour schedule to ensure that students in rural areas receive the same information as their metropolitan counterparts.
In extending our service to rural schools, a SATAC representative will follow up with your school on multiple occasions leading up to the visit by tertiary staff. This will include confirmation of:
- Time
- Location of presentation
- Number of students
- Room and equipment requirements
- Attendance of other schools (if applicable)
- Confirmation of tertiary information evening (if applicable)
The SATAC representative will provide a template detailing the visit (including contact details) and this will be easily transferable for use in your school newsletter.
To ensure students gain the maximum benefit of our service, it would be appreciated if the school could consider the following:
Booking Stage
- School to confirm attendee numbers and year level with SATAC representative prior to the tour commencing. This will ensure that sufficient information material is provided.
- School to confirm that there is no other event being held at the same time/date, where such an event might impact on attendees.
- School to confirm availability of audio-visual equipment (computer/laptop, data projector)
- School to provide details of an alternative contact person in the event that the designated contact is unavailable.
Preparation
- School to actively encourage the whole cohort to attend rather than only those who have indicated an interest in post secondary study. The presentation may inspire students into following a path previously not considered or give new options to others.
- School to actively promote details of the visit and its purpose, giving students time to consider any questions they might like to ask.
- In the event where a Tertiary Information Evening is held in your area, it would be appreciated if this could be actively promoted to students and parents and placed on the school calendar.
On the Day
- School to have all necessary equipment (as confirmed) set up prior to the arrival of tertiary representatives.
- School to ensure that the space allocated for the presentation is adequate and comfortable for the number of students attending.
- In the event that a school is travelling to another school to attend the presentation, they should allow sufficient time prior to the commencement of the session as well as time afterwards to pick up literature and ask questions.
- The school is responsible for the supervision of the student group at all times and to ensure appropriate behaviour is adhered to throughout the presentation.
- If the presentation is to be held in an area with stair access only, it would be appreciated if assistance was available from students to carry materials.
- Evaluation forms provided by the presenters are to be completed and returned on the day to provide for ongoing improvements to the Rural Tour.
