Frequently asked questions about individual bonuses

The following frequently asked questions will assist students who are considering making an individual application for bonuses under the Universities Equity Scheme.

I am a current year 12 student who is in receipt of a Centrelink means-tested income support payment or who holds a Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card in my own name.

Simply enter your Centrelink Customer Reference Number (CRN) into your undergraduate application. You will need to tick the box authorising SATAC to match your data with Centrelink.

I am a current year 12 student whose parent/guardian is in receipt of a Commonwealth means-tested income support payment, or is the holder of a Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card.

You will need to complete an application form and submit supporting documents. You will be able to access the application form from within your undergraduate application. See ‘What supporting documents will I need to provide?’ below.

I am not a current year 12 student.

You will need to complete an application form and submit supporting documents. You will be able to access the application form from within your undergraduate application. See ‘What supporting documents will I need to provide?’ below. Please note, not every applicant will be required to supply supporting documents. Please carefully read through the information below and follow the instructions that are most relevant to your personal circumstances.

Acceptable supporting documents include:

  • a letter from Centrelink or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs in your own or your parent/guardian’s name showing you/they were in receipt of a Commonwealth means-tested income support payment during the year in which you achieved your ATAR
  • a Centrelink or Department of Veterans’ Affairs payment summary (issued for taxation purposes) in your own or your parent/guardian’s name showing payments of a Commonwealth means-tested income support payment in the year in which you achieved your ATAR
  • a copy of a Centrelink  or Department of Veteran’s Affairs Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card in your own or your parent/guardian’s name valid for the year in which you achieved your ATAR, or
  • a letter from the South Australian government Department for Education and Child Development (DECD) confirming you were eligible for assistance under the School Card Scheme for the year in which you achieved your ATAR.

Please note screen printouts of Centrelink or Department of Veterans’ Affairs payment details are not acceptable unless they have been stamped by the issuing office.

All supporting documents must be attached to the application form for individual bonuses - you can access this form from the Documents page of your undergraduate application.

The concession card must have been issued in your own name for you to use the CRN in your application; however, you can submit a copy of your parent/guardian’s concession card along with an application form - see ‘What supporting documents will I need to provide?’ above.

Means-tested income support payments are Centrelink (or other Commonwealth) payments subject to an income and assets test (e.g. Youth Allowance).

Please note:

  • Family Tax Benefit (FTB) Part A and/or B are not considered to be means-tested income support payments for the purpose of an individual bonuses application. However, if you hold a Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card in addition to being in receipt of a Family Tax Benefit payment, you may still be eligible to apply for individual bonuses. Please see ‘What supporting documents will I need to provide?’ above.
  • Means-tested income support payments can be in your own name or in the name of parent/ legal guardian – see ‘What information will I need to complete an application for individual bonuses?’ above.
  • Means-tested Department of Veterans’ Affairs payments are acceptable for the purpose of applying for individual bonuses.

SATAC will not access, use, modify, disclose or retain information or data about any Centrelink or Department of Veterans’ Affairs customer (including the Customer Reference Number), except in performing our official duties of assessing eligibility for individual bonuses.

SATAC will only request data from Centrelink if you provide consent for us to do so in your undergraduate application. If you do not provide consent then you will need to provide an application form with documentation in evidence of your eligibility.

Your CRN is your unique Centrelink identifier. It has nine numbers followed by a letter e.g. 222 555 999H. You can find your CRN on letters sent to you by Centrelink at the top left hand side of the page next to the word 'Reference', or on concession cards next to 'CRN'.

Do not assume that the CRN is the number you use to log on to Centrelink online services.
If you do not have any recent letters from Centrelink you will need to contact Centrelink to obtain your CRN.
