Quotas
All courses have a quota - the maximum number of places available in a course each year.
For some courses, the number of eligible applicants exceeds the number of places available so applicants
must be ranked in order of merit to enable selection to take place.
Subquotas
Subquotas are used where places need to be reserved for particular groups of applicants.
Music courses for example, use subquotas to ensure that places are available for applicants
with different instrument choices.
Where a subquota is used, offers are still only made to eligible applicants. However, such
eligible applicants are only ranked against other eligible applicants within the same subquota group.
Cohorts
For competitive courses (where there are more applicants who meet the entry requirements than places available),
applicants are grouped into four cohorts by qualification type:
- Higher Education
- School
- Vocational Education and Training (VET) including university bridging courses
- TABS and STAT
For each cohort an applicant can compete in, they are ranked against other applicants in the same cohort.
In each course, offers across the cohorts will generally be made on a proportional basis e.g. if 20% of eligible
applicants for a course are in the school results cohort, 20% of offers will generally be made to this cohort.
The same applicant may compete in more than one cohort (regardless of how they met the MER), if they have multiple
qualification types. For this reason, it is important that you include all of your completed qualifications in your
application. For example, even if you have completed higher level awards, you should include your studies at secondary school.
