The TAFE SA Assessment of Basic Skills (TABS) can be used to meet the Minimum Entry Requirements and contribute to the selection score for courses at Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma level. TABS can only be undertaken once every 6 months.

If you are applying for TAFE SA’s Bachelors degree level courses and do not currently meet the Minimum Entry Requirements (MER) you may do so by successfully completing the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT).

The TABS is a series of multiple choice tests that you can undertake to meet the MER for most TAFE SA courses.

There is no cost to sit the TABS.

The TABS assesses two basic skills:

  • literacy

  • numeracy

60 minutes is allowed for the assessment; 30 minutes for each section.

Section 1 (Literacy) asks applicants to recognise the correct spelling, meanings and grammatical use of commonly used words. Applicants are also asked to read a short passage and to demonstrate their understanding of it by answering the accompanying questions.

The 40 questions in this section are multiple choice; the correct answer must be selected from four options in each case.

Section 2 (Numeracy) is presented in two parts:

Part A (Numeracy), 25 questions about the basic numeracy which arises in normal day-to-day life. Questions involve basic operations on whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages and simple graphical interpretations.

Part B (Numeracy) Applicants for some courses are also expected to answer this section, which comprises 15 questions on algebra, indices and geometry.

The 40 questions in the Numeracy section are multiple choice questions; the correct answer must be selected from four options in each case.
