Guardianship
Retrenched Workers
Under 17 - Youth Compact

To qualify for any of the above priority entry conditions you must be eligible for selection by meeting the application and eligibility requirements for your chosen course including:

  • Applying on time
  • Meeting the Minimum Entry Requirements for the course
  • Paying the required application fee
  • Taking any required actions related to their application

Guardianship
Under the South Australian Whole of Government Rapid Response Initiative, Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology (DFEEST) has agreed that people under 25 years of age who are under the guardianship of the Minister (or were under the guardianship of the Minister for a qualifying period) will have all course and materials fees waived in TAFE SA courses that are open to the public, provided they enter into an Individual Training and Employment Plan.

Where there is no competition for a place in a course, all eligible applicants who meet the minimum entry requirements will be offered a place. To find out more, contact a TAFE SA Student Services Officer or contact your local Families SA District Office.

Retrenched Workers
The Australian Government has announced a compact with retrenched workers providing priority placement into training for a higher level qualification than they already hold.

The training priority is available to people who are:
  • 25 years and over
  • retrenched since 1 January 2009 and have an official retrenchment notice
  • registered with a Job Services Australia provider

The training priority is not available to:
  • retrenched workers with a Diploma or higher qualification (including a Degree or higher)
  • retrenched workers who are already being supported to a government subsidised training place
  • unemployed people who do not have a formal notice of retrenchment
  • workers who have been stood down or given reduced hours
  • self-employed, contract or casual workers who are now unemployed who do not hold an official notice of retrenchment

Youth Compact

Under 16
TAFE SA will not offer a place in a course to a person who is under 16 years of age at the time of course commencement, unless they have already attained the minimum education standard which is Year 12 (SACE) or its equivalent (such as Certificate II). Under the Education Act (1972), young people under 16 are required to be enrolled in a school and actively participating in schooling or an approved learning program. Schools may purchase VET as part of a school enrolment for these students but such purchases are made in direct negotiation with the school and TAFE SA.

Under 17
Any offers made by TAFE SA to young people who are 16 years of age, and who have not already completed a Certificate II or SACE, will be conditional upon the young person:

  • not being currently enrolled in a school and not intending to enrol or re-enrol in a government or non-government school to undertake or complete the SACE in 2012
  • being required to pay a fee and purchase any essential materials or tools of trade
