How does TAFE SA select between applicants

Your chances of being selected into a TAFE SA course depend upon:

  • The maximum number of places available in the course, .i.e. the quota
  • Whether you have met the normal admission requirements for the course, i.e. whether you are eligible
  • Whether your qualifications make you eligible to compete in one or more cohorts
  • How many other eligible applicants there are in each cohort
  • How competitive your qualifications are in relation to those of the other eligible applicants, i.e. your rank
Applicants are grouped into 4 cohorts by qualification type
  • Higher Education
  • School
  • Vocational Education Training(VET) including university bridging courses
  • TABS and STAT
For each cohort an applicant can compete in, they are ranked against other applicants in the same cohort.

In each course, offers across the cohorts will generally be made on a proportional basis e.g. if 20% of eligible applicants for a course are in the school results cohort, 20% of offers will generally be made to this cohort.

Selection Methodology

For each of its courses, TAFE SA has a set of rules covering both eligibility and ranking.

Eligibility
Eligibility rules determine who is able to be considered for selection into a course. For most courses, eligibility is determined by a minimum academic qualification (eg year 12, higher education study, TAFE/VET study or TABS/STAT results).

If you have more than one type of qualification (eg both year 12 and some VET study) you may compete in both of the cohorts.

For some courses, eligibility is determined by other criteria (eg an audition or a portfolio) in addition to academic qualifications.

Ranking
Since the number of eligible applicants for most courses exceeds the quota, eligible applicants must be ranked in order of merit to enable selection to take place. Ranking rules determine how the order of merit is established.

There are different methods of ranking for each type of qualification. Courses have cohorts (that is groups) and if you are eligible to compete in more than one of them, your rank (and hence your competitiveness) in one cohort may be higher than in another.

Note that selection methodologies and selection decisions remain the responsibility of TAFE SA. SATAC's role is to implement the selection methodologies for each course on behalf of TAFE SA.

Summary of how selection works
Application to TAFE SA course

  1. Assessment
    • SATAC assesses qualifications eg year 12, higher education study, TAFE/VET courses, TABS/STAT
    • TAFE SA provides results of auditions to SATAC
    • SATAC checks eligibility for each course preference
    • SATAC checks eligibility for each subquota
    • SATAC calculates selection ranks for each subquota if eligible (ie year 12, higher education, TAFE/VET, TABS/STAT)

  2. Selection
    • TAFE SA establishes quota numbers for each subquota for all courses
    • SATAC makes an offer on behalf of TAFE SA to an applicant's highest course preference for which he/she is eligible and sufficiently competitive in at least one subquota

If you are unsure as to whether your qualifications make you eligible to apply for a course, contact TAFE Information on 1800 882 661 or the course coordinator at the relevant campus.
