TAFE SA selection and the Special Tertiary Admissions Test
Results from the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) can be used to meet the Minimum Entry
Requirements and contribute to the selection score for TAFE SA’s Bachelor degree level courses.
Before choosing to sit the STAT you should check that you are applying for an appropriate level
of award (Bachelor degree).
If you are applying for courses at Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma level and do not
currently meet the Minimum Entry Requirements (MER) you may do so by successfully completing the
TAFE SA Assessment of Basic Skills (TABS).
If you have an existing STAT result or are sitting as part of a university application you can have your STAT
result used for your TAFE application.
What is the STAT?
The STAT has been developed by the Australian Council
for Educational Research (ACER) to assess a range of competencies commonly considered important
for success in tertiary study.
STAT is a two hour test under exam conditions containing 70 multiple-choice
questions, half of which are ‘verbal reasoning’ and half ‘quantitative’. The questions are designed to
assess the ability to think critically and to make sense of a variety of material. For instance,
applicants may be required to read and think about a prose passage, interpret a graph, use basic
mathematical relationships or make inferences from a table of data.
The STAT is marked by ACER in Melbourne, the scores are reported to SATAC and then used according to
TAFE SA selection policies.
How to book to sit a STAT
Contact SATAC on 8224 4000 to book a sitting (organised sittings listed below).
Please note that if you pay for a STAT sitting after Wednesday 1 June 2011 results will
not be available to SATAC in time for the main offer round.
If you need to sit the STAT outside of South Australia and the Northern Territory contact SATAC for advice.
If you require assistance to sit the STAT because of a disability you will be given the opportunity to inform
SATAC when you apply. SATAC will make every effort to accommodate your needs, but it cannot do so unless advised.
If you have previously sat the STAT be sure to indicate this in your online application in TAFEWeb.
You can sit the STAT more than once, but only once each admissions cycle. SATAC will use your best result
if you have sat in more than one admissions cycle.
STAT alternative sittings (extra fee payable)
If you are unable to attend any of the organised sittings listed below, SATAC will
make alternative testing arrangements for you but there is an extra fee of $58.00.
The STAT coordinator at SATAC will contact you by letter or phone to advise you of the test arrangements.
Note that, if your application is very late and/or you are unable to sit the STAT by Friday 10 June 2011, your
STAT results will not be available to SATAC in time for the main offer round.
How much does it cost?
The cost for a normal sitting of the STAT is $89.00. A STAT alternative sitting costs an additional $58.00,
making a total cost of $147.00.
