All courses have a
quota ie a maximum number of places available each year.
For most courses, the number of eligible applicants usually exceeds the number
of places available so applicants must be ranked in order of merit to enable
selection to take place.
Within the quota, most undergraduate courses have
subquotas for applicants with
different types of qualifications (eg year 12, TAFE/VET
level study, higher education study, special entry test
results) so that groups of applicants with similar
qualifications compete against each other and not
against applicants with different qualifications.
