satac    Quotas and subquotas

All courses have a quota ie a maximum number of places available each year. For most courses, the number of eligible applicants usually exceeds the number of places available so applicants must be ranked in order of merit to enable selection to take place. Within the quota, most undergraduate courses have subquotas for applicants with different types of qualifications (eg year 12, TAFE/VET level study, higher education study, special entry test results) so that groups of applicants with similar qualifications compete against each other and not against applicants with different qualifications.

This web has details on how all of the main undergraduate subquotas work:

year 12
higher education
TAFE/VET
special entry
bridging courses
