Charles Darwin University is the Northern Territory's only university, attracting students from across Australia and from more than 60 countries. CDU offers some of the most distinctive courses in Australia, ranging from Indigenous cultural and south-east Asian studies to tropical, environmental and desert science. Our pharmacy, law, sports science and humanitarian & community studies courses are sought out by students from across the country. We also offer bachelor degrees in engineering, nursing and education that offer work placements so you can gain valuable professional experience and make industry contacts while you're still studying. Many CDU courses are now available in part-time and external mode as well, so you can fit your studies around your lifestyle. Our students have a choice of studying in Vocational and Technical Education and Training (VET), Higher Education (HE) or a combination of the two. This means you can begin your studies in a VET course and graduate with a certificate, or apply to go on to study a HE course and graduate with either a diploma, advanced diploma, bachelors degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma, masters degree, or a doctorate. Some courses have a quota and offers for admission into these courses will be based on merit. This means that even though you may meet the minimum admission requirement to the University, your score may not be competitive enough to receive an offer to a course that has a quota. For full details refer to Special Entry subquotas. CONSIDERATION OF NT SCHOOL LEAVERS Charles Darwin University is committed to meeting the needs of students in the Northern Territory. The University offers a number of prizes and scholarships to recognise the achievements of selected Northern Territory school leavers who choose to study at CDU. A Northern Territory School leaver in 2010 who is named in the top 20 students from the NT or gains an ATAR (or equivalent) of at least 95 would be considered for the Vice-Chancellor’s Prize or Dean’s Scholarship. A school leaver in 2010, who applies to Charles Darwin University and who completes studies at a high school in the Northern Territory or at a high school in a rural area specifically identified by the University and gains an ATAR of 80 (or equivalent) is guaranteed an offer of a place in a course at Charles Darwin University through the SATAC process. The University offers bonus points to students who have completed studies in a high school in the Northern Territory or a high school in a rural area specifically identified by the University. Similarly, students who have started and/or completed studies at Charles Darwin University will receive bonus points. For applicants who are eligible for year 12 bonus points, SATAC will add the points to the SA/NT university aggregate. The year 12 selection rank for Charles Darwin University courses will then be the ATAR which corresponds to the revised aggregate. A similar process is undertaken for applicants who have completed year 12 interstate or the International Baccalaureate. Selection ranks are university-specific and do not appear on SACE/NTCE documentation. For applicants who are eligible for bonus points from prior study at Charles Darwin University, SATAC will adjust the relevant selection ranks for Charles Darwin University courses accordingly. ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDERS The University provides admission pathways and arrangements for Indigenous Australians. ACADEMIC YEAR - COMMENCEMENT DATES Commencement dates are Monday 18 July 2011 for mid year entry and Monday 7 November for Summer Semester. Details may be obtained online from www.cdu.edu.au/studentnet/calendar.html. You should note, however, that enrolment dates are much earlier. If you receive an offer to a course you will be sent detailed enrolment instructions and you should enrol on-line. There is no deferral for mid year and Summer Semester admission periods. CREDIT TRANSFER/ADVANCED STANDING Credit transfer is available for applicants who have completed or partially completed higher education awards at other universities or successfully completed certain VET or TAFE courses. Students who have completed or partially completed studies at Charles Darwin University will have their advanced standing assessed at the time of their enrolment. Alternative exit awards are available from some courses to students who discontinue study prior to completing the full requirements of the course. Facilities provided to students include: careers advice, child care, a multi-purpose building at Alice Springs campus, computer facilities including Learning Precincts in the Library at Casuarina and Palmerston campuses, Indigenous Academic Support, counselling, disability support, study skills assistance, international student support, gymnasium, sporting facilities and clubs. Located on Casuarina campus, North Flinders International House provides single student accommodation with all rooms air-conditioned and fully furnished, including a desk and small refrigerator. The centre is nationally accredited, accommodating children from ages 0 to 5 years. Early bookings are essential. The centre is run by committed and long-term staff and is open 50 weeks a year.
