ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
Flinders is everything a modern
university should be - progressive and dynamic yet still friendly and
accessible. It places high value on innovation and excellence in its educational
programs and its research and has a strong commitment to access and equity. A
number of schemes encourage and support
students from non-traditional backgrounds.
Flinders has over 16,000 students and offers 60 undergraduate and more
than 100 postgraduate courses. While there is a strong
focus on regular direct contact between staff and students, many courses use new
information and communication technologies to supplement face-to-face teaching
and provide flexible options.
The main campus in Adelaide is one of
the most attractive in Australia. Set on a 165-hectare site overlooking the
coast, it incorporates a central lake, thousands of trees and areas of natural
bushland.
The University is linked to
the city, the local railway station and a nearby shopping
centre by frequent bus services, many of which terminate at
the main buildings.
ADMISSION
Flinders University offers many courses
in a variety of areas and the entry requirements for these courses vary.
Information in
year 12 subquota
for undergraduate courses outlines the basic SACE/NTCE requirements for entry to the
University's undergraduate courses. Equivalent interstate and overseas
qualifications will also be considered, as well as the International
Baccalaureate. Applicants who have completed the equivalent of more than one
semester (full-time) of a degree course may be considered eligible for selection
on the basis of their higher education results - see
higher
education subquota
for undergraduate courses. Applicants who have completed certain TAFE/VET qualifications are also eligible to apply - see
TAFE/VET subquotas.
It is extremely important that
applicants get advice on the correct admissions requirements for courses before
listing preferences on SATAC's UniWeb. Advice should
be sought from the Admissions/ Prospective Students Office on (08) 8201 3074 or 1300 657 671 (local
call cost).

socio-economic backgrounds.

Principals Recommendation Program, Flinders
University appreciates that a student's performance
in year 12 studies may not always be a true
indicator of an ability to succeed at university.
Accordingly, Flinders will consider a school's
recommendation of an applicant's academic
performance and potential for university study for
admission to selected Flinders courses.
Further information about all of these
schemes is available from the Admissions/Prospective Students Office on (08) 8201 3074 or 1300 657
671 (local call cost) or visit
www.flinders.edu.au/special-entry.
BONUS POINTS AND SELECTION
For
applicants who are eligible for year 12 bonus points, SATAC
will add the points to the SA/NT university aggregate. The
year 12 selection rank for Flinders University courses will
then be the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) which
corresponds to the revised aggregate. A similar process is
undertaken for applicants who have completed the year 12
interstate or the International Baccalaureate.
Note that
applicants can receive bonus points under the Bonus Points
Scheme and the various access schemes up to a maximum of ten
bonus points.
Seelction
ranks are university and/or course-specific and do not
appear on SACE/NTCE documentation.
QUOTAS
Quotas which determine the number of new
students admitted to all courses are determined annually and for most courses
applications exceed supply. Selection is made on the basis of academic merit and
for some courses, performance at an interview or audition. The University
reserves the right not to offer a course for which insufficient applications
have been received.
ACADEMIC YEAR
- COMMENCEMENT DATES
Commencement date
for mid year entry is Monday 25 July 2011. Details may be obtained from the following website:

CREDIT TRANSFER
Many courses at Flinders will grant credit for related
studies completed at other registered training providers.
Credit transfer is available for applicants who have
completed or partially completed an award from another
university, or who have completed an appropriate level of
qualification from TAFE, VET provider or Registered Training
Organisation (RTO). Many TAFE/VET
qualifications have already been assessed for credit towards
some of our courses, others will require individual
assessment. Eligibility for credit does not guarantee
admission to a course at Flinders. Further details on credit
transfer may be obtained from the Admissions/Prospective
Students Office on (08) 8201 3074 or 1300 657 671 (local
call cost). Further information about credit is available at
www.flinders.edu.au/credit.
DUAL TAFE AND
FLINDERS UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS
The Department of Education and
Children's Services (DECS) and the University have developed a dual
study program which allows students to undertake studies in certain vocational
areas towards a TAFE award (for example diploma programs) and a Flinders
University degree simultaneously. These dual awards will permit students to gain
vocational knowledge and skills while completing complementary study in a degree
course. The dual award will be shorter in length than the combined length of
the separate degree and diploma courses - typically both awards would normally
take five years of full-time study to complete (BA: three years; TAFE award:
two years). Under the dual award students complete both awards in four
years resulting in savings in fees. Prospective applicants must
obtain an information sheet on the dual award programs before completing an
application.
Enquiries should be made to the
Admissions/Prospective Students Office on
(08) 8201 3074 or 1300 657 671 (local call cost), or to the TAFE
SA Information
Service, telephone 1800 882
661 (freecall) or 8463 6300 (mobile callers).
